Dr. Rankin is a deputy commission er of the Food and Drug Ad ministration in Washington, D.L., a position he has held for the past 29 years. Mr. C. D. Page of Winston Salem visited Saturday with his aunt, Mrs. M. E. MuderonCol lege Street. Mr. and Mrs. Jimmy Cline Jr. and family spent the weekend in Burlington with Mr. and Mrs. Jimmy Fair cloth. Messrs Cline, Faircloth and Will Montsinger spent some time on the east coast deep sea fishing. Sgt. and Mrs. Billy Warren and family of Knoxville, Term, spent the weekend with Mrs. Warren’s parents, Rev. and Mrs. Barney Oliver. Mr. and Mrs. Henry Greer cf Statesville spent Sunday with Mr. and Mrs. Clay Greene of Vilas and Mrs. Dock Hodges and Kenneth in Boone. They also visited with Mr. Dock Hodges who is very ill at Watauga Hos pital. Mr. Roby Vines has returned home from Watauga Hospital where he spent two weeks re covering from a broken hip. Visiting with Mr. and Mrs. Vines on Sunday were Mrs. Will Ward and Mrs. Dewey Ward of Lenoir. Dr. and Mrs. William Mathe son have returned home after spending two weeks in Del Mar, Calif, with their daughter, Mrs. E. R. Barnes, Lt. Barnes and new grandson Jeffrey Alan. They also spent a week in Hawaii and visited in Chicago with Mrs. Matheson’s relatives enroute Mr. and Mrs. Toby Pegram and children Connie Jean and Golden Lee of Winding Gulf, W. Va. spent the weekend with Mrs. Pegram’s mother, Mrs. E. E. Earp and Mr. Earp. Professor and Mrs. C. £. Rankin from Greensboro visited Saturday with their mother, Mrs. J. D. Rankin and with Prof, and Mrs. John Howell. Mr. and Mrs. Morris Watson of Route 1, Hudson announce the birth of a daughter, Wendy Annette, Oct. 6 at Caldwell Me morial Hospital. The baby’s grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Ben Baird of Bristol Road and Mr. and Mrs. Otis Watson, Deep Gap. Visitors in the home of Mr. and Mrs. James B. Mast during last week were Mrs. Mast’s sis ter, Mrs. J. H. Talley and Mr. Talley, and a sister-in-law Mrs. James P. Herring, all of Wil inirKTtnn Mr. M. L. Warren Jr. is a patient in Watauga Hospital. Visiting Mr. and Mrs. Clyde C. Miller of Big Hill Road last week were Mrs. Miller's sis ters, Misses Katherine and Anne Becker and Mrs. E.R. Krause, all of Cleveland, Ohio. This was Mrs. Krause’s first trip to North Carolina. Mrs. Vernon Waters has re turned home after spending sev eral days in Charlotte Memori al Hospital, where she under went surgery. Mr. Dean G. Isaacs has re turned from a visit with his brother, Gordon Isaacs in The Dalles, Oregon. He also visited with relatives Dewey and Mar vin Thomas and Mrs. Charles Thomas in Wasco, Oregon. Mr. and Mrs. James Dancy spent the weekend in Kingsport, Tenn. with Mr. and Mrs. Hu bert Loggins and son. Mrs. Jack L. Wilks, Jr. is making her home with her \parents, Mr. and Mrs. C. H. Gilstrap, while her husband, 14. Jack Wilks, is serving a term of duty in Vietnam. Mrs. Wilks is attending Appalachian .State University where she is a junior. Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Cline and Mr. and Mrs. Ray Farthing have returned home after touring the New England states, going to New Brunswick, Canada, Nova Scotia, and back through Central Canada and the central states, Visiting Sunday with Mr. and Mrs. Herman Greene and Mrs. Edd Henson were Mr. and Mrs. Jimmy Greene of North Wilkes boro and Mr. and Mrs. Pat Greene and children of Trade, Term. Mr. and Mrs. William D. Horton of Gastonia announce the birth of a son, William David, Oct. 3 at the Gastonia Memorial Hospital. The infants grand parents are Mr. and Mrs. John Horton of Vilas. Mr. and Mrs. Bill Cannon and Gary of Hudson, Mrs. Margie Palmer and children Brent and Kim and Mark Harris of Lenoir were dinner guests Sunday in the home of Mr. and Mrs. E. £. Earp. Mrs. Jewel Watson has re turned home after spending a week at Watauga Hospital where she was treated for injuries re ceived in a car accident. M/Sgt. and Mrs. William £. Rush and family are visiting with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. E. Rush on Carolina Ave nue. Enroute to a new assign ment at Fort Hood, Texas, this is M/Sgt. Rush’s first visit home in eight years. Mr. and Mrs. BillMcGalliard and family erf Charlotte spent the weekend with Mrs. McGal liard’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Henson. Also visiting Sunday were Mr. and Mrs. Dex ter Trivette and family. Mrs. A. B. Graybeal of Mar ion, Va. has returned home af ter spending ten days with her sister, Mrs. D. L. Wilcox and Mr. Wilcox. Mr. and Mrs. Wilson Norris have returned from Indianapolis where they visited their daugh ter, Mrs. Joseph Fitzgerald, and Dr. Fitzgerald and children. While there, the Norrises toured the new National Head quarters building of the Am erican Legion. Mrs. Norris al* so visited with Mrs. Estella Harnell, Auxiliary president, at the national headquarters of the Legion Auxiliary. Mr. and Mrs. Dexter Eggers spent Friday with their daugh ter, Mrs. Tommy Shull, at Johnson City Memorial Hospi tal, Johnson City, Tenn. Mrs. Eggers is recovering from sur gery. Mr. and Mrs. King Triplett of Raleigh spent the weekend with relatives in Boone. Mrs. Ocie Blackburn and Mrs. Woodrow Starnes spent last week in Daytona Beach, Fla. with Mr. and Mrs.Charles Trivette and Charles Jr. Mrs. Henry Clay Ayres of Poplar Hill Drive, Boone, has returned home from a four day visit to her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Loftin Mock, Jr., and their little daughters, Christie and Char lotte. The Mocks live in Vir ginia Beach, Virginia. Mr. and Mrs. Norman Greer spent the weekend in High Point with their son Mr. Bill Greer, Mrs. Greer and daughter Jana. Visiting in the home of the Ray Wilsons Sunday were Mr. and Mrs. Charles Hayworth of Johnson City, Tenn. Miss Kay Tolbert of Colum bia, S. C. and Mr. G. T. COMBS (Flowers photo) Combs- Presnell Wedding Miss Wanda Marie Presnell and Terry Michael Combs were united in marriage in a 7 o' clock ceremony Thursday even ing at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Bill Day of Sugar Grove. The Rev. Roger F. Foster perform ed the ceremony. The bride’s parents are Mr. and Mrs. Arbold Presnell and the bridegroom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Bryant Combs. Both families live in Sugar Grove. A program of wedding mus ic was given by Miss Rox anna Carroll, soloist, and Mrs. Carol Isaacs, pianist. Given in marriage by her father, the bride wore a gown of white satin covered with lace and featuring lace sleeves end ing in calla points over the wrists. Her detachable lace train was attached at the shoul ders and the illusion veil was fastened to a satin headpiece. She carried a white Bible top ped with a purple orchid. Miss Kathy Presnell was her sister’s maid of honor. She wore a yellow satin dress featuring a lace top and lace sleeves and carried a long-stem yellow mum. Mr. Combs was his son’s best man and Jerry Shockley Legion Will Meet With Auxiliary The regular meeting of Post 130, the American Legion, will be held with members of the Auxiliary Friday night at the Legion Building. Weekend guests of Mrs. C.C. Ragan were her daughter, Mrs. R. V. Hayes, Mr. Hayes and Ka ren of North Wilkesboro. They attended the ASU football game Saturday night. Mrs. Blanche Roberts and son Charles, owners of City Florist, were in Charlotte Sept. 25 at tending the Design School for Florists. Christmas designs a long with many new trends in flower arrangements were among the topics discussed. Dr. Ella Hardin and Mrs. Addie Clawson were dinner guests Tuesday erf Mrs. C.C. Ragan. and Ray Johnson were ushers. The bridegroom’s mother wore a light blue wool dress with black accessories; the bride’s mother was attired in navy blue with navy ac cessories. Each wore a white carnation corsage. The bride graduated from Watauga High School in 1967 and is enrolled as a sophomore at Appalachian State University. The bridegroom, also a gradu ate of Watauga High, attended the N. C. School of Automation in Greensboro. After a wedding trip to Jek yll Island, Ga„ the couple's new address is Sugar Grove. Card Party Fashion Show Attended By 95 The Friday evening card par ty-fashion show sponsored by the Boone Junior Woman’s Club was attended by an estimated 95 persons. Games of bridge and rook were played, and throughout the evening an informal fashion show was held. The local stores and their models were Beech Mountain Ski Shop, Mrs. Ruth Coe and Mrs. Delores Furman; Belk’s, Mrs. Janet Sue Auten; C upboard Casuals, Miss Clarita Adams, Mrs. Joy Coffey and Mrs. Bev erly Hawkins; Hunt’s, Mrs. Len nis Greene and James Hast ings; Town and Campus, Brent Davis, Larry Ford, Ricky Hod ges, Jack Roten and John Ro ten; and Varsity Men’s Wear, Walter Broyhill and Jay Little. At the end of the evening, score sheets were tallied and prizes were awarded for the high scores of the night. Mrs. * Carolyn Taylor received a li quor decanter donated by Pat ricelli Originals for her score in rook and Dr. William Smith was given a 44-inch fir tree from Barnett Nurseries for his winning score in bridge. King Street — Boone, N. C. AAUW Members To Attend Convention The president and second dee-president of the Boone Branch of the American Associ ation of University Women will >e delegates to the N. C. State Convention this weekend in Chapel Hill. Saturday morning, Mrs. Dav id R. Hodgin, local president, and Mrs. A. M. Denton Jr. will hear James Reston, exe cutive editor of The New York Times, address the University Day Convocation, which marks the 175th anniversary of the founding of UNC. Other speakers at the two day event will be J. Forrest Barnwell, Raleigh architectand vice-president of the firm that did the Expo 67 geodesic dome; Robert Schlageter, associate di rector of the Ackland Art Cen ter and former director of Charlotte’s Mint Museum; Dr. Ann DeHuff Peters, Medical Director of the Frank Porter Graham Child Development Re search Center, UNC: and Mrs. T. Merrill Hamilton, art spec ialist in the Salisbury Elemen tary Education Center. Dr. Peters and Mrs. Hamilton will have topics in keeping with AAUW’s study and action in child welfare and education. 4-H County Council Has Monday Meeting The 4-H Council met in the 4-H office Monday, Sept. 30 at 7:30 p.m. Paul Ragan, President, pre sided over the meeting. Suzette Stout led in the Pledge of Al legiance and the 4-H Club pledge. Mrs. Addie Clawson, 4-H leader from Rutherwood, presented the devotional. Items discussed were the . Class Reunion Is Arranged At Bethel Members of the 1941 gradua ting class at Bethel High School are planning to get together in the Bethel School lunchroom October 20. It is hoped that each mem ber of the class will be pres ent along with their teachers and lunchroom workers. Members of the 1940 and 1942 classes are invited. Everyone come, bring your family and plenty of food. In Fashion A new style this season is that of long pants worn under dresses. The garments may be made of satin in a color com bination with a sash the color of the pants. This is strictly for evening wear. If one owns a jeweled belt it may be used to dress up such a costume in place of the cloth sash. Capes are being shown in a variety of fabrics and styles. They may be short capes of fur or velvet or they may be long capes of plaid or checkered wools. Prizes given away were do nated by local merchants. The event was held in the lobby of the Watauga High School for the purpose of rais ing money to buy a two-way radio for the Watauga County Rescue Squad. MBS LANTHIER Will Marry At West Point Mr. and Mrs. Romuald George Lanthier of Marlboro, N. Y.# announce the engagement of their daughter, Christina, to Lt. Claude Alton Johnson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Hal G. John son of Boone. Miss Lanthier graduated from Mount Saint Mary Academy, Newburgh, N. Y., and attended Marymount College in Tarry town, N. Y. She is presently attending Dutchess College in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. Lt. Johnson graduated from Appalachian High School in 1964 and received his B.S. degree and was commissioned at the UJS. Military Academy at West Point, N. Y., in June, 1968. He is presently stationed at the Na tional Air Defense Base at High lands, N. J. A military wedding is planned for Nov. 24 at the Chapel, West Point, N. Y. State 4-H Fair Booth, District Activities Day, The Citizenship Short Course and the 4-H Achievement Program. Some time was spent on what is the 4-H County Council, its purpose, how it should be or ganized. Officers for 1969 were elec ted as follows: President, Shar on Stout; vice-president, Brian Dishman; secretary and trea surer, Kay Minton; and reporter Rick Wicker. The Poplar Hill 4-H Club received the banner for the club with the largest attendance. Delta Kappa Gamma Chapter Will Meet Miss Ruby Akers, incoming president of Alpha Gamma Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma, has announced the first meeting of the group for the current academic year at the Women’s Club House on Cherry Drive Friday evening, October 11. Mrs. Laura F. Church, Vice President, has announced the program topic, ‘‘Yeats: A Study in Miniature.” All committees will meet for 15 minutes at the end of the meeting. Committee chairmen are asked to make plans in advance. Carden Club Will Have Rummage Sale The Appalachian Garden Club will sponsor a rummage sale at the Hillside Dairy Building this weekend. Hours will be from 1 to 9 p. m. Friday, Oct. 11, and from 9 a. m. until noon on Saturday, the 12th. Donations may be left at the Hillside Building Thurs day night after 7. _____rmrCi riva Entries In Sidewalk Art Exhibit To Be Picked Up Entries in the sidewalk art exhibit to be held Saturday, Oct. 19, by the Girl Scouts of the county will be picked Jr. Woman’s Club Hears Dr. Rich The October meeting of the Boone Junior Woman’s Club was held Thursday evening at the home of Mrs. Jane Flynt. To open the meeting, Dr. Francis M. Rich presented a talk on the changes in the po litical patterns and fallacies on the political scene during this campaign year. Dr. Rich is from the Political Science Depart ment of Appalachian State Uni versity. During the business session, two upcoming events were dis cussed. These were the mem bership dessert to be held later this month and the fashion show which featured Montaldo’s of Charlotte Friday. Mention also was made of the Junior Wo man’s Club District Meeting to be held Friday, Oct. 25, in North Wilkesboro. After the meeting was ad journed, dessert and beverage were served by the hostess, Mrs. Flynt, and her co-hostess, Mrs. Peggy Hayes. A guest that evening was Mrs. Barbara Webb. Poplar Hill Drive 4-H Club Has Meet The Poplar Hill Drive 4-H Club met Thursday night at the home of Mrs. Harold Burkett. Nine members and four lead ers attended the meeting and during the business session, new officers were elected. They are Ricky Wicker, pres ident; David Spainhour, vice president; Linda Crouch, sec retary; Randy Burkett, treasur er; Donnie Burkett, reporter; and SharonStout,activitychair After the elections, a pro gram was given by Mr. Marshall McNeil on the American Flag. Later that night the 4-H mem bers selected projects for the coming year. After the business session was closed, refreshments were served. Local Carden Club Holds Meeting The Appalachian Garden Club held its October meeting at the home of Mrs. W. W. Williams on Blue Ridge Avenue. Twelve members and two guests were present. Mrs. Ronnie Brooks, pro gram chairman, introduced Mrs. Lester Hardin who con ducted a workshop featuring the construction of decorative Ma donna figurines. the business meeting was conducted by Mrs. George Flow ers, club president. Mrs. Rob ert Cody, president of the Wa tauga Council of Garden Clubs, presented Council news and an nounced the prospect of a class in flower arranging to be spon sored in the near future. Mrs. Robert Davis, project chairman, announced plans and details of the club’s rummage sale Friday and Saturday. The meeting was adjourned after a dessert course. up in principals’ offices on Monday, Oct. 14. The girls are encouraging students from all the county schools to participate in the four categories. The first di vision will include first through third grade students, the second division will be fourth and fifth graders and the sixth through the eighth grades will be re presented in the third category. The fourth group to be high school students. The Scouts suggest mounting entries on colored paper. The art may be done by almost any medium—finger painting, crayon, water colors, oils, tem pra and other methods. The student should put his name, school, grade, and address on the bach of his en try. Warren Dennis, art profes sor at Appalachian State Uni versity, will judge the entries.
